Words Matter

Ever wonder what Jesus meant by “make disciples”?
Here’s a simple guide to key terms.

Disciple
A learner or apprentice. In general, a disciple is someone who follows another person to learn from them and emulate their craft or way of life.
Disciple (of Jesus)
Someone who chooses to apprentice themselves to Jesus—learning to be with Him, become like Him, and do what He did.
Disciplemaking
The intentional investment of one person in another to help them be with Jesus, become like Him, and do what He did.

In short: helping others grow as disciples.
Disciplemaker
A disciple of Jesus who actively helps others follow Jesus—guiding them to be with Jesus, become like Him, and do what He did.
Discipleship
A broad term describing the overall process of growing as a disciple of Jesus and helping others do the same. However, in recent decades, it has often been reduced to education or information transfer. While learning is essential, information alone is not the goal—transformation and equipping are.

For this reason, we prefer the more active word disciplemaking, which highlights a life shaped by time with Jesus, being transformed by Jesus, and participating in the mission of  Jesus.

The Greatest Invention Since the Wheel…Is Still the Wheel

Most of us think of wheels as the things that move cars, carts, and bikes.
But in the 1930s, the Navigators introduced a different kind of wheel—one designed to move people forward in their relationship with Jesus.

So, What Is the Disciplemaking Wheel?
The Wheel is a simple picture of a disciple of Jesus. It illustrates what a healthy Christian life looks like when Jesus is at the center.
